Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) is a collaborative effort between United International University (UIU) and University Grants Commission (UGC), Bangladesh. IQAC, UIU aims to establish a Quality Assurance (QA) culture at UIU that can ensure the practice of continuously improving culture, demonstrate accountability and enhancement and thus, can satisfy the stakeholders. The quality assurance areas covered by IQAC are governance, curriculum content design and review, student admission, progress and achievements, physical facilities, teaching-learning and assessment, student support services, staff and facilities, research and extension, process management and continuous improvement.
Innovations initiated by IQAC, UIU in the areas of curriculum content design and review and teaching-learning and assessment is the focus of this discussion. ucam.uiu.ac.bd is the web portal that accommodates digital curriculum content development and archiving by providing a standardized format for developing course syllabuses and lesson plans on an online platform. It brings efficiency in developing and managing knowledge in the programs and adds effectiveness to the system by offering innovative reporting tools for administrators to monitor the performance of the system users, viz. the faculty members.
Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), UIU has developed online course syllabus platform (ucam.uiu.ac.bd) for faculty members. It includes following features: 1) Detailed guidelines as ready reference on how to develop course syllabus, 2) Specimen course syllabus form for a beginner, 3) A pictorial (screenshots) presentation with instructions for faculty members about how to follow the process of uploading a course syllabus on the aforementioned platform, and 4) Mapping Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) with topic outlines.
Online course syllabus development platform and archiving have added following efficiencies and effectiveness in the system: 1) Standardized format with 11 sections (Basic Information, Counselling Hours, Book and Reference, Equipment and Course Information, Course Objectives, Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), Teaching Methods and Topic Outline, Assessment Methods, Grading Policy, Additional Course Policies, and Additional Information) in the course syllabus assures that course information conveyed to the students are not missing any important link, 2) Detailed guidelines and specimen help the faculty members to plan (syllabus) a course quickly and effectively, 3) Digital archive helps a faculty to develop syllabus for a course repeated in the upcoming trimester with minimum editing and time-efficient way, finally 4) The course syllabus reporting system helps program administrators to monitor the compliance of the faculty members regarding course planning aspects of the curriculum management and teaching-learning process of the program.
Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), UIU has developed online lesson plan entry and archiving platform (ucam.uiu.ac.bd) for each course and sections taught by the faculty members. It includes following features: 1) Detailed guidelines as a ready reference on how to develop lesson plans, 2) Specimen lesson plan form for a beginner, and 3) A pictorial (screenshots) presentation with instructions for faculty members about how to follow the process of uploading a lesson plan on the aforementioned platform.
Online lesson plan development platform and archiving add following benefits to the system: 1) Standardized format with 4 sections (Course Information, Lesson Learning Outcomes (LLOs), Lecture Breakdown, and Equipment and Aids) in the lesson plans to assure that the lesson plan guide the faculty members properly to plan a lecture in which all import learning outcomes are covered, 2) Detailed guidelines and specimen helping the faculty members to plan a lecture quickly and effectively, 3) Digital archive helping a faculty to develop lesson plans in the upcoming trimester with minimum editing and time-efficient way, finally 4) The lesson plan reporting system help program administrators monitor the compliance of faculty members regarding lesson plan.
Course File Upload
The digital course file archiving system, accommodated in the online platform (ucam.uiu.ac.bd), developed by Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), UIU facilitates faculty members at United International University (UIU) to use a central repository for course syllabus, lesson plans and assessment tools used in a trimester. It works as a linking pin between three important elements of an academic program: curriculum, teaching-learning, and assessments. Its archive works as a knowledge base for the succession of quality assurance amidst changes in people (faculty members) of the delivery process. It also brings convenience in monitoring the compliance of the faculty members to the standards set for a program by management.
Faculty performance evaluation
Faculty performance evaluation is core to any evidence-based approach to evaluating teaching and research performance. It provides faculty members with systematic and ongoing reflection of their own performance. The form that UIU has prepared for this purpose is called “Faculty Performance Self-Appraisal Evaluation form” and each faculty member is required to fill this form after finishing three trimesters. This form not only judges performance for the past academic year but also prepare the faculty members better for the current academic year. The form includes four sections as follows: Part One - Teaching and Supervision which includes two sub sections, Part Two - Professional Development Activities which includes 13 sub-points, Part Three - Self-Reflection on Different Duties in the past year and Part Four - Overall self-evaluation of faculty performance in past year. The form also includes a testimonial at the end form.
